2013 Team Info

Reminders:  You can switch from one team to the other if your schedule dictates.  You must declared your intentions to participate each month but you do not have to fill out a new registration each month.  If you do not declare your intentions by the Thursday conference call, there is no guarantee you will have a place on the shuttle.  These are not guided hikes.  The STA is the logistical support for the hikes.  You walk at your own pace with STA members serving as the lead on the hike and the "sweeper" on each hike to ensure you complete the section. You must check in with the STA support team rep at the end of each section so we have a record that you have completed the section.  If you are injured during the hike, please report the incident to the STA support team before you leave the end location.

Team 1 (STHC#1) - Team hikes on the third weekend of the month.  See main Hiker Challenge page for the schedule.

February 23 - 24 Section 2 - Rt 32 Perkins Center to Clear Creek Lake in Cave Run Recreation Area.  Distance of 24 miles.

Schedule:

Thursday (Feb 21) :  Required conference call at 8:30 p.m.  Call in number is 1.800.977.8002 - participant code is 3468634#

Friday:  If you prefer you can drive in on Friday night, stay locally at the Journey End Lodge just down the road from Clear Creek on Rt 211 or camp near the Clear Creek Lake Parking Lot.  Journey's End will give a discount on rooms, regular $69.00 reduced to $55.00.  Come early and go to Morehead to the CCC Winery, owned by the same folks as the Lodge and get a discount on some great food. Click on link for details.  Mention you are with the STA Hiker Challenge.

Saturday:  0800 - 0830  Meet at Clear Creek Lake parking lot off Clear Creek Road.  To get there you take Rt 60 into Salt Lick, Ky. and take a turn on Rt 211.  Rt 60 is accessible from I-64.  Go about 8 miles and turn left on Clear Creek Road at the signs.  About three miles you will see the lake on the right and the parking lot entrance shortly on the right.  First shuttle will depart when full after folks check in.  Please see Steve or Karen to check in and pay necessary fees.

Shuttle will take participants back to Morehead to Perkins Center where the hike begins.  Follow Rt 32 back toward the Interstate.  Please walk against the traffic.  After you go under the overpass, you turn left and then immediately right onto Bluestone Road.  Follow the blazes around and over to Rt 60 where you turn left and again - CAREFULLY WALK - on the shoulder about 2 miles to where you will see the support vehicle at the Spurlock Farm trail head.  Then you are across the field over the bridge and into the Forest.  From there you follow the blazes up the hill and over and down to Cave Run, past the Ranger Station (closed on weekends).  Trail comes out on service road and main road.  You turn right on the main road and walk less than 5 minutes down to the intersection of the road over the dam.  Over the dam you go and at the end of the dam you turn left into Stoney Cove.  Down the road you will see the support team waiting with your 5 lb drop and directions to the campsite.

Sunday:  0730 - Drop your 5 lb drop with support team back down at Stoney  Cove and head out on the Trace.  Trail is well blazed and you should have no difficulties getting along the Trace and over the hill and down to Clear Creek where the support vehicle will be there to give you back your drop and clear you to head home.

Notes on Future Challenge Section Hikes

March Hike:
March 23 - 24 from Clear Creek over to Ky 715 RRG parking lot off side trail from suspension bridge.  Again, you can come early on Friday and camp in the Gorge or at a local hotel or lodge.  Part of your fee covers the permit for overnight parking Saturday night at the lot.  STA will get the permits and have them there when you arrive.  Shuttle will pick up first come - first served at this lot. Half the team is asked to be at the RRG parking lot by 7:30 on Saturday and the second half at 8:30 since the size of the shuttle vehicles will be reduced to 15 passenger vans from the buses.

April Hike : April 19 - 21  Ky 715 to Heidelberg.  This is invite your friend or spouse weekend.  This is the section that will take you through the RRG, over to Natural Bridge and over to Hwy 52 on Saturday.  The shuttle pick up point on Saturday morning is the Pinecrest Lodge just off Hwy 52.  All participants are asked to consider coming in on Friday, April 18 so they can get an early start back to the start point.  Participants are asked to book there overnight stay with our partners, The Pinecrest Camp and Lodge for Friday night and Saturday night.  You have lots of choices from camping out for $5.00 to a private room to a hostel room with a few others.  There are plenty of options and because the first shuttle will leave on Saturday morning at 0700 it is important you try to be there.  Part of your fee for this section will cover the "big hiker breakfast" prepared by the STA staff on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and your dinner on Saturday night. It is your responsibility to contact Brenda or Chuck at the Pinecrest Lodge at 606-464-2309. See more on their facebook page "pinecrestcamplodge" or web site pinecrestcampkentucky.com.

This is a perfect weekend to invite the spouse, friend, significant other along for the stay and maybe walk a few miles with you.  The Sunday hike will be the road walk from Pinecrest down to Heidelberg where the support team will take you back to the lodge.  The road walk will be easier with the 5 pound drop in effect.

April will be the last month where you will have the assistance of the 5 pound drop so get ready.
Team 2 (STHC#2)  - Team hikes on the first weekend of the month, one month behind Team 1.  Team 2 will have to hike twice in November to finish the Challenge.
