Steve Barbour, Executive Director


Steve Barbour, was born and raised in the Bluegrass.  The son of a United Methodist pastor, Steve has lived all over the Bluegrass.  Currently living on the family's ancestral farm in Burtonville, Kentucky, he is entering his fourth year as Executive Director of The Sheltowee Trace Association. 

A founding member of the STA, Steve is a retired Army Public Affairs broadcast journalist and public affairs professional with over 20 years in public relations with the U.S. Army and the Federal Government.  Before moving home to Kentucky from Maryland, Steve worked in the press office for the Assistant Secretary, Administration on Children and Familes, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Steve has personally hiked over a1000 miles of the A.T. .  His first experience at a lengthy overnight journey was when he lead urban youth on their first adventures into the Forest in the 90's.  Steve has completed an End-2-End hike of the Sheltowee Trace in 2012.

The Sheltowee Trace Association


Incorporated in 2009, The Sheltowee Trace Association (STA) is a non profit 501c(3) organization formed to protect, preserve and promote the Sheltowee Trace National Recreational Trail as a significant national resource for the enjoyment of hikers, bikers and equestrians, and for the value that wild and scenic lands provide to all people.

The organization is the public complement to the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Kentucky State Parks, and a significant partner in the management and operations of the Sheltowee Trace Na­tional Recreational Trail.


We are focused on:

  • Fostering cooperation and communication among all trail users
  • Protecting this vital and precious natural resource
  • Ensuring trail maintenance and movement of “road miles” back into the forest   
  • Improving trail access     
  • Supporting informational and educational programs Championing volunteer projects 
  • Advocating for policy issues  that support the STA and the Trace
  • Developing an ongoing and expanding trail advocacy effort that seeks funding in support of land acquisition, conservation easements, trail maintenance, management and operations
