Volunteer Stories

                        PAM GIBSON
                2010 SHELTOWEE TRACE
                VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

McCreary County resident and long time trail crew leader and maintainer, Pam Gibson, was recognized during the annual STA Trail Meeting as the 2010 Volunteer of the Year.

It is fitting, that in the first year the award is presented that Pam Gibson is the recipient.   Pam's effort personify what it means to be a trail maintainer and a volunteer.  For years, Pam has been organizing crews along the Trace south of Cumberland Falls that cleared  brush, downed trees and making significant improvements to the Trace

In addition to her hands-on work on the trail, Pam is recognized for her work as an instructor in the proper methods for maintaining and building trail and her work with the McQuery County Hiking Group where she leads hikes on trails throughout southern Kentucky.

Pam is also a member of the board of directors of the Sheltowee Trace Association.

VOLUNTEERS
CONTRIBUTE 900 HOURS IN FY 2010!

Thank you to all our volunteers in 2010.  Volunteers are the foundation of every trail organization.  So it is for The STA.  In our first year we have seen first hand what can be accomplished when we all work together towards a common goal.  Volunteers to the STA have contributed over 900 hours to projects organized by the STA.

We appreciate all the help this past year with trail clearing, blazing, trail building, stair building, mowing trail heads and giving time to check trail.

In 2011 we have a goal of 1800 volunteer hours toward projects on the Sheltowee Trace.  Several of these at this time will need a large number of volunteers.

First up in November is the project to replace the roof surface and clean up around the Starr Shelter.  In the late Spring, volunteers will be need to reroute trail in and around Bark Camp Shelter and help with the construction of a new bridge.

Your volunteer hours are so important in our work with the Forest Service.  The more we can do to help on the ST, the more the Forest will do to help us with other projects.  Most grant applications that require matching funds will allow credit for volunteer hours as a part of the match.

It is easy to volunteer.  Individuals can volunteer or groups can take on sections of the trail or larger projects.  To volunteer send and email to volunteer@sheltoweetrace.org.
