The Verne Orndorff Legacy Fund
Over 38 years ago one man had the vision to establish a long-distance hiking trail in the Daniel Boone Forest that would run the entire length of the Forest. Following on the growing popularity of the Appalachian Trail, Forest Service employee Verne Orndorff patched together existing trials, some new trails, and the back country roads to build the 287 mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. On June 23, 1979 an opening ceremony was held at Cumberland Falls State Park with Federal, State, Forest Service and local Officials. Verne received a $25.00 savings bond and a letter of appreciation for his thousands of hours of work.
Today each of us benefits from the visionary work of Verne and his long time friend Doug Billips. Verne has gone now but he leaves behind a tremendous "legacy" for all us to protect, preserve and promote to make sure the Trace is there for generations to come. Established in 2016 following the passing of Trace founder, Verne Orndorff, The Legacy Fund is an endowment fund were your donations will be held in trust and the interest earned on the endowment will be used to continue the work and vision of Verne.

Year End $10,000 Matching Fund Drive to Kick Start the Legacy Fund
Help us ensure the legacy of Verne Orndorff with your gift to the Legacy Fund. From December 2 to April 15th, every dollar given, will be matched with a donor contribution up to $10,000.00. This is an incredible opportunity to build up the Legacy Fund and secure the future of the STA and the STNRT.
We have set up a Go Fund Me page at the link below where you can make your secure, tax deductible pledge. Your gifts and the gifts of others will go into an investment fund where only the interest will be available for the STA's use, upon the retirement of Executive Director, Steve Barbour.
So we have a few years, we hope, to build up the Legacy Fund to ensure the STNRT's future and to ensure we are ready to bring on new leadership in the years ahead.
