The Verne Orndorff Legacy Fund
Over 38 years ago one man had the vision to establish a long-distance hiking trail in the Daniel Boone Forest that would run the entire length of the Forest. Following on the growing popularity of the Appalachian Trail, Forest Service employee Verne Orndorff patched together existing trials, some new trails, and the back country roads to build the 287 mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. On June 23, 1979 an opening ceremony was held at Cumberland Falls State Park with Federal, State, Forest Service and local Officials. Verne received a $25.00 savings bond and a letter of appreciation for his thousands of hours of work.
Today each of us benefits from the visionary work of Verne and his long time friend Doug Billips. Verne has gone now but he leaves behind a tremendous "legacy" for all us to protect, preserve and promote to make sure the Trace is there for generations to come. Established in 2016 following the passing of Trace founder, Verne Orndorff, The Legacy Fund is an endowment fund were your donations will be held in trust and the interest earned on the endowment will be used to continue the work and vision of Verne.

Year End Legacy Fund Drive Nears $9,000.00!
Friends thank you for your support to the Orndorff Legacy Fund. In the mail we have received donations from our members and friends that have now pushed the fund total to $8.840.00. We are just $1160.00 away from our goal of $10,000.00.
Recently I was asked if the funds were for my salary. No, this fund drive is all about the future, the next director and staff in the future. Between now and when I step down, which will be in a few years, are vision is to have in place funding for a full time director and staff.
The work will go on for years to come. The trail will continue to evolve and need maintenance and new opportunities for connecting the Trace to the National Trail System will become possible. In the future. And with your gift to the Orndorff Legacy Fund you can ensure that the STA will be there to keep the Trace open and accessible for your children's children.
Please consider making your tax deductible gift today. With your help we can complete this drive by the end of January.
Your support to this fund drive and other needs has been phenomenal.
