The 2019 outdoor season on the Trace came to a close at the Gathering, held December 7th in Frankfort. Over 170 were in attendance, a record, to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2019. 60 members, a record, of the 2019 Hiker Challenge program joined others who hiked the Trace on their own.
Jason Wish, the new Fastest Known Time holder as well as Connie Mulder the oldest female to complete the Trace were honored. Tom and Susan Tounge along with Doug Doerrfeld were recognized for their volunteer commitment to the work of the STA and support of the STNRT.
The STA Board of Directors established the Dave Dummer Award in recognition of the founder of the Hiker Challenge program. Mindy Gilliam from Fraziers Bottom, WV received this first award given to the Hiker Challenge participant that endured, persevered and overcame the difficulties of the 11 month backpacking adventure.
This year we were honored to have Dan Olsen, the Forest Supervisor for the Daniel Boone National Forest join us to speak and to recognize STA Cave Run Lake Chapter president, Lucy Pryor, as the USDA Forest Service, South Region, Volunteer of the Year.
Throughout the evening, guests were entertained with music from White Line Fever a Bluegrass Band from Cincinnati.
The 2019 Gathering was the 8th and is held each year at the end of the Hiker Challenge season. If you hiked the Trace in 2019 please let us know so that we might honor you and send you a certificate and patch to recognize your achievement.
