Hiker Challenge Team

Steve Barbour,

Executive Director

Steve has been involved with the Hiker Challenge program since its creation in 2012. A member of the first Hiker Challenge class Steve has for 10 years been the leader of the program. As executive director, Steve is responsible for the overall organization and implementation of the Hiker Challenge program. Now as we broaden our support team, Steve will be out on the trail, hiking along with the different teams over the course of the year and working with our coordinator and team leaders.

Tali Hunt,

Challenge Leadership Coordinator

Since 2013, Tali has been active with the STA, first as a member of the Class of 2013 with husband Dave, then as a End-to-End repeater over several years. While her full time job is as a physicians assistant, she also has a side gig as a backpacking guide with Women in Good Company, a guide service for women. Tali is wilderness first responder qualified and has been the leader of the 3-day, 2-night Team Sheltowee.

In addition to continuing to lead Team Sheltowee, Tali serves as the Challenge Leadership Coordinator, focusing on recruiting and assigning the volunteer Team Leaders and crews, coordinating their required training, and insuring they are meet the requirements set for the program.

Interested in Becoming a Hike Leader?

We are expanding our Hiker Challenge leadership team. Experienced volunteers are needed as team coordinators and team leaders. We are returning to our original vision of the program where participants improve or develop their long-distance backpacking skills.

  1. Leaders will have direct interaction with Hiker Challenge Teams, getting to know and supporting participants.

  2. Distribution of the work from one person (Steve) to a shared, team approach.

  3. Encouraging Hiker Challenge to return to its roots as primarily a backpacking program
