The Sheltowee Trace Association was founded in 2009.

Who We Are

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit association to achieve the formation of a highly functional cross-state recreation trail.

Our Mission

Our mission is to protect, preserve, and promote the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail as a significant national resource for the enjoyment of hikers, bikers, and equestrians and for the value that wild and scenic lands provide to all people.

Our Vision

The STA envisions the creation and maintenance of a trail that connects to the national trail network and provides opportunities for intentional engagement in the great outdoors.

Our History

The Sheltowee Trace Association was born out of a need to work with the land managers who control the Trace to assist them in the maintenance, accessibility and promotion of this National Recreation Trail.

In the fall of 2009, a group of concerned outdoor enthusiasts met with the Forest Service in Winchester to discuss the needs of the Trace and how an organization might be able to help.

At the end of this meeting, those present agreed to form the Sheltowee Trace Association and to elect officers to guide the organization for the first year. Learn more about our leadership and the Board of Directors.
