STA 2022 Volunteer(s) of the Month

 

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the STA. Faithful volunteers work on a diverse list of projects within the STA. From clearing trail, building trail, leading outdoor activities, working with the Executive Director in the home office, the work of the STA cannot get done without our volunteers. Each month we recognize one or more volunteers for their dedication to the mission of the STA, to preserve, protect and promote the Trace so it’s there for future generations to explore and experience.

December 2022 - Katherine Stone, Lexington, KY

Serving as the volunteer coordinator of the 2022 Gathering’s “Silent Auction”, Katherine exceeded all expectations when she secured over 30 donations from area businesses and supporters. Through her efforts, the Silent Auction raised nearly $5,000.00 toward the work of the STA We are grateful for Katherine’s contributions and are thrilled to name her the Sheltowee Trace Assoication’s Volunteer of the Month for December. .

November 2022 - Lucy Pryor Morehead, KY

In recognition of her volunteer efforts as the leader of the Cave Run Trail Crew and its stellar work keeping the Trace open and accessible across the first 50 miles of the Trace. For her significant personal dedication to working the Trace and leading the organization in volunteer hours earning her our appreciation and recognition as the Sheltowee Trace Association’s November volunteer of the Month.

October 2022 - Matthew Clements Frankfort, KY

In recognition of his volunteer efforts as the leader of the Hiker Challenge's Team Sheltowee, his assistance in organizing the hike, meeting, and greeting the hikers, and making sure they all have a safe and rewarding experience while on the Trace. His contributions to the success of the Hiker Challenge program have earned him our appreciation and recognition as the Sheltowee Trace Association’s October Volunteer of the Month.

September 2022 - Kara Fleckinstein Owingsville KY

In recognition of her tireless work across the Cave Run Chapter area, her willingness to carry the heaviest loads, work with a joyful spirit and completing some of the hardest task in trail maintenance, she has been selected as the September Volunteer of the Month.

August 2022 - Denise Combs Sanford, KY

Denise knows no bounds when it comes to her dedication to the maintenance of the Trace. She works tirelessly across the length of the Trace as an individual volunteer and a member of several trail crews keeping the Trace open and accessible for all users. Additionally, Denise serves as the STA volunteer trail registrar recording and reporting volunteer hours of individual and trail crew volunteers. Her efforts set the standard for those who wish to join in maintaining the trail and have earned her our appreciation as the August Volunteer of the Month.

July 2022 - Rose Dixon, Wellington, KY

As a faithful member of the Cave Run Lake Chapter’s maintenance team, Rose approaches each day’s work on the Trace with a joyful attitude, a willingness to learn new skills and is open to doing any job with a positive outlook. In 2022 she has donated over a week’s worth (48 hours) of her time in support of the trail crew’s efforts keeping the Trace open and accessible for all users. Rose’s contributions to trail maintenance of the northern most 50 miles enables that section of the Trace to keep its reputation as being the best maintained section along the Trace.

June 2022 -

Roscoe Peacock

The STA Volunteer of the Month for June is Roscoe Peacock. Roscoe is a member of the STA board and serves as the leader of our Communications and Marketing Team. Roscoe has been the driving force behind the teams’ efforts to consolidate our social media presence, bring consistency to our messaging, and the branding of the organization across all platforms. His dedicated efforts to update our online store and our webpage have produced significant improvements in sales and the marketing of The Sheltowee Trace Association.

May 2022

Kimberly and Barry Tonning

Volunteer(s)for the month of May are Barry and Kimberly Tonning of Mt. Sterling. In addition to being a member of the STA Board of Directors, Barry is also active with the Cave Run Lake Trail Crew as one of their certified sawyers. In May, Barry donated more than 12 hours to hiking out with saw and gear and clearing the trail of downed trees with his trusted required second his wife Kimberly, in Bath and Menefee Counties. Sawyers are crucial to keeping the trail open and accessible and we so appreciate the support Barry gives. Thank you, Barry and Kinberly and congratulations on being selected the STA May Volunteer(s) of the Month.

 

April 2022 -

Sally Watson

Sally spends countless hours volunteering to lead a trail maintenance crew, primarily from Western Kentucky, organizes and leads day and overnight hikes she leads on sections of the Trace, and provides support to to the teams participating in the 2022 Hiker Challenge. These are just a few examples of the significant contributions she makes to the work of the STA.

Her dedicated efforts are critical to the continued success and growth of our trail maintenance and outdoor recreation programs.

 

March 2022 - Paula Serra

For her countless hours spent volunteering her time keeping track of the Chapter’s volunteer hours, and other crucial data that have significantly improved our efforts in reporting the Chapter’s work to the STA Board of Directors and the staff of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Her dedicated efforts are critical to the continued success and growth of our trail maintenance work in the Cave Run Area.

 

February 2022 - Troy Hutchinson

The countless hours he spends volunteering to hike the Trace each month in advance of Hiker Challenge teams, providing detailed turn-by-turn directions, have proved invaluable to the success of participants each month. His critical information assists in their safely completing the monthly Challenge and finding confidence in their ability to navigate on the Trace. His dedication to getting it right the first time, his attention to detail has ensured that our program continues to provide a safe, enjoyable, backpacking experience that rivals the best Outfitters in the nation.


 

Donna Kirkwood - January 2022

The countless hours she spends volunteering to organize and mail out thousands of dollars in merchandise in support of our online store have saved hundreds of hours of time, permitting STA leadership to spend critical time on further initiatives advancing the cause of the STA. Her dedication to getting it right the first time and her attention to detail have insured that the online community knows they are getting fulfillment services that rival others in the marketplace.
